EGMUN 2011
From Wednesday 16th to Sunday 21st November our school participated to the Espergærde Model United Nations Conference 2011. This is the biggest MUN conference helt in Denmark, and the participants (around 450 people) were students of schools from many different European countries such as Germany, Italy, Estonia, Sweden and more.
The NG’s delegation consisted of:

- Alice Giannini – Chair of the 1st Committee
- Matthew Mahmoudi – Delegate of Japan (Ambassador), Security Council
- Serge Savin – Delegate of Japan, 6th Committee
- Kirsten Solevad – Delegate of Japan, Commission on the status of women (Economic and Social Council)
- Siddhart Prasanna – Delegate of Japan, 4th Committee
- Rebecca Vaa - Delegate of Japan, 3rd Committee
DIARY
- DAY 1: The first day of MUN, all the participants met at Glyptoteket where her Royal Highness Crown Princess Mary came to say a few words as to why MUN is so important for young adults to take part in. After a couple of speeches from the princess, the Minister of Education and the headmaster of Espergærde Gymnasium, everyone was offered champagne and chocolate. The experience was both thrilling and enjoyable. We met many new people who were also attending the conference.

-
DAY 2: The second day of MUN, there was the opening ceremony where the ambassadors from each country gave out their speeches. Following the opening ceremony each delegate was to go to their respected committees and start lobbying. Lobbying is where delegates start collaborating and writing their resolutions papers. The exhausting day ended with a fun party at a bar in Copenhagen.
- DAY 3: The third day of MUN, committees continued to lobby to finish off resolutions and get them corrected and approved by the approval panel. On the same day all delegates and chairs had to attend a lecture, where an expert talked about the 8 goals to defeat poverty, and how we were reaching these goals so far. This was probably the most intense day, for both delegates and chairs because that’s when the actual debate started.
- DAY 4: On day 4, committees continued debating the remaining resolutions, with more intensity and decided upon the best resolution which had to be sent to the General Assembly. A short session of the general assembly also took place, where all the delegates met to further discuss the resolutions passed by the committees. At night, the official EGMUN party took place.
- DAY 5: The final day was spent on another short session of the general assembly and then the closing ceremony took place. Each chair gave a speech on the work done in his/her committee during the conference. The conference ended on a fun note of music and awards where the whole conference came to life.
The following are comments from each member of the delegation

SID: EGMUN is very important to me as it is my first MUN and also because it gave me a new experience of life and I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of the conference. Being a part of this made me feel important as real problems of the world were being discussed.
KIRSTEN: I made lots of new friends from all around Europe, and had an amazing time with the people from our delegation. Each delegate from japan got a prize and I think that japan did an awesome job at MUN.
REBECCA: I have to say EGMUN has been one of the best experiences of my school career at Nørre Gynmasium. Being a first timer, the conference seemed intimidating and formal at first, filled with a lot of intelligent, ambitious young students all dressed in suits. But once you broke through the business like image, it was a fantastic 5 days. People were so open and fun, and the students from Espergærde were extremely welcoming. EGMUN has been a great way for me to build up confidence within public speaking and debating, because they environment where you get to develop these skills is filled with other, supportive teens who are going through the same thing.
My first EGMUN was an adventure I will never forget. I’ve made great friends, not just from Nørre, but also from other schools around Denmark, Germany, Sweden, and Italy. Winning Best Speaker in my committee was such an honor, and helped me recognize far I’ve come within MUN. I can’t wait to go back next year.
MATTHEW: Participating in my third, and last, Model United Nations conference was a truly unforgettable experience. My journey as a young diplomat started at EGMUN '10, and saw its climax and end at EGMUN '11, where more than 450 students, like myself, from many different nationalities had gathered to discuss international relations and politics. This year, I had the privilege of being the ambassador of Japan in the Security Council, where several prescribed topics, mostly regarding the question of Libya and South Sudan, were being discussed. Japan played an extremely significant role.
One of the most interesting things I experienced as a delegate, was constantly keeping focused on one thing: peace without acts of aggression. I was set on going through with diplomatic negotiations and solutions, which at times was very difficult, but paid off in the end, when everyone could present a resolution, addressing and handling one of the biggest disputes known to our world. We were proud.
My greatest achievement, however, at this conference was winning the award for being the best delegate of the conference, which entitles me to a scholarship to Hult International Business School, along with a letter of recommendation.

ALICE: Even though this wasn’t my first conference, it was still my first time as Main Chair of a Committee. This was a completely new experience for me and I had an amazing time: being a chair brings a lot of responsibilities and pressure! I had to direct 30 people through the debate for 3 days and it wasn’t easy but, even though I had to work hard, I still had a lot of fun with my delegates. I enjoyed the authority of being in charge but I also learnt many new things thanks to the delegates in my committee. Unfortunately this was my last MUN conference but I can say that it was absolutely the best one ever! I am personally so proud of all the results that our delegation achieved this year and I hope that our MUN club will continue to be active and work hard.
SERGE: As a first-timer at MUN when I think of what the best part of EGMUN was, I feel tempted to say “Wearing a suit”. But EGMUN is about much more than the suits, it’s about what’s under them -in terms of personality, charisma and intelligence. All of these skills beneath the suit help you when you’re trying to make two very different countries compromise for the greater good of the resolution, they help you when you are defending your resolution in your commission/general assembly, but they do help you a lot as well when you make friends in your spare time.
During my time at EGMUN I’ve become better at debating, negotiating and I have improved my formal English skills. Furthermore I’ve gotten some great friends – EGMUN is not just MUN, you get a great amount of time to socialize with the lovely MUN-people!
Thank you all for an amazing journey.
