The English Speaking Union’s
Public Speaking Competition

The English Speaking Union’s Public Speaking Competition:  the Danish Final.

On Wednesday 9th April 2014, the Danish final of the ESU’s Public Speaking Competition took place at Copenhagen International School, City Campus. The winner of this competition gets to represent Denmark in the International Final in London.

Two of this year’s finalists were students from Nørre Gymnasium: Lærke Christensen (below) and Christoffer Minnet (top), both from 2i. This year’s theme was “Imagination is More Important than Knowledge”.

Lærke’s speech,  “The Dinosaur, The Sheep and a Generation of Me’s” cleverly referenced “The Little Prince” by Antoine De Saint-Exupéry and argued for the power of our imagination. Christoffer’s speech “Technology Destroys Our Imagination” pondered on what sort of world his niece, Viola, would grow up in.

Both Lærke and Christoffer gave tremendously good accounts of themselves in what was an extremely tough competition. They had qualified to be two out of the eight finalists from a field of 28 semi-finalists. However, there can only be one winner and this year’s eventual winner was Caroline Meile from Skt. Annæ Gymnasium.

This is only the second time that Nørre Gymnasium has competed in the English Speaking Union’s Public Speaking Competition, so to be represented by two out of eight finalists is a very satisfactory outcome. It goes without saying that we will be competing again in next year’s semi-finals.
